چکیده

The role of the saturable absorber dye DDI in the cw passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire/DDI laser both with and without compensation prisms is investigated. This laser self-starts when the concentration of the dye is greater than -2 x 10M for both picosecond and femtosecond pulses. With the prism pair, the laser generates Gaussian pulses 150 fs in duration. The corresponding spectrum is sech in shape with a FWHM of 8 nm. These parameters are independent of the DDI concentration. Without the prism pair, the laser generates picosecond pulses with the FWHM decreasing from 8 to 3 ps as the dye concentration is increased from 2.5 X 10-4 to 1 X 10-3 M. Concurrently the pulse shape changes from a Lorentzian to a nearly symmetric two-sided exponential shape. The picosecond spectra for different dye concentrations are also presented.

Effects of intracavity dispersion on the starting dynamics of continuous-wave passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire/DDI lasers.

Through analysis of transient autocorrelation traces, we show that intracavity dispersion significantly affects the number of initially oscillating modes as well as the buildup of passive mode locking in picosecond and femtosecond lasers.

Starting dynamics of a cw passively mode-locked picosecond Ti:sapphire/DDI laser.

We show that, for a cw passively mode-locked picosecond Ti:sapphire/DDI laser, the first autocorrelation trace with negligible cw background occurs at a delay time of 20 mu;s, or 1600 round trips from the first relaxationoscillation peak. The trace suggests that the pulse consists of a primary pulse as short as 4.4 ps and of small secondary pulses that form a much wider pedestal of the trace, e...

Birefringence-induced spectral features in continuous-wave and passively mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers.

We show that the transient spectrum of a continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser during the initial stage of the buildup, which exhibits multiple clusters (of longitudinal modes), is due to the spectral windowing effect of the Brewster-angle-cut Ti:sapphire crystal, which acts as a birefringent filter in the laser cavity. This effect is also responsible for certain spectral features of a passively mo...

Q-switching stability limits of continuous-wave passive mode locking

The use of a saturable absorber as a passive mode locker in a solid-state laser can introduce a tendency for Q-switched mode-locked operation. We have investigated the transition between the regimes of cw mode locking and Q-switched mode locking. Experimental data from Nd:YLF lasers in the picosecond domain and soliton mode-locked Nd:glass lasers in the femtosecond domain, both passively mode l...

All Solid-State Passively Mode-Locked Ultrafast Lasers Based on Nd, Yb, and Cr Doped Media

Mode-locking technique is a widely used method for generating ultrashort laser pulses. The mode-locked laser output is a sequence of equally spaced laser pulses. The pulse width is limited by the spectral range of the gain medium and inversely related to the bandwidth of the laser emission. Compared with the active mode-locking technique, passively modelocked laser with saturable absorber is ab...
